I haven't ever played a female character in an online RPG before,and I don't think I ever will but I can see where some people might enjoy it.

I'm not -roleplaying- a female character.

However, if I ever choose to -roleplay- a female character, my roleplaying will be nothing more than a cute euphemism describing how I'm writing about a female character, which I've done on a number of occasions.

In my head, there's a clear division of who I am and what I'm writing about. I don't try to mix the two.

I don't wear nair polish. I don't wear dresses. I'm not a woman.

However, I choose to USE a female avatar in a GAME.

The only problem is when someone wants to believe that this somehow represents me.

Oh, and it's fairly easy to catch males playing females. Just watch what they type. If you see a female type "whatsup," you know it's a male. Anyone else got any other dead giveaways?

I roleplayed a cute dancing twi'lek (alt) on star wars galaxies. The sad thing was, whenever people asked if I was male, I told them the truth, and the same people would still flirt with me...

In something completely unrelated, I have long hair, not because I like pretending I'm a woman, but because I have a big head and it helps to frame said big head. It also, I noticed a long time ago, makes me look like a native american and attracts women.

On the other hand, it really pisses off guys.

Why?

Because they see me from behind, assume I'm a woman (I have a small frame), check me out, realize I'm a guy--and, obviously, are a tad confused about checking out a guy. Unsure of their own sexuality, they brush off any complex thought with a write-off of "he must be gay," and leave it at that.

People like things nice and simple. People have their schemas. When we walk out in public, one of the first--if not the first--thing we notice about other people is if they're a man or a woman. When lines are blurred in this regard, people either get frustrated about it, or become more cautious in making judgements.

(Edit: This is a generalization.)

There's nothing wrong with making friends. However, I don't see how me being a man driving a woman character makes "making friends" any more difficult.

to be very blunt i am playing a game and not roleplaying .

if i were there with a group of friends tossing dice (yes i am that old) than you can get into the spirit of it.

i (to use the old tired line) might as well have a character that is nice to look at since i will be using that or other characters for hopefully some time

Why does it bother you that I drive female characters?

Why do you feel that, because I am a male, I am required to play a female character?

How do you reason that, because I drive a female character, I am somehow a pervert, or a homosexual?

I mean, as far as I can tell from your logic, people who played the Druid in Diablo 2 have some kind of weird animal fetish, people who played barbarians liked bashing heads and tearing up corpses.

I won't even touch WoW with their undead race.

I recently discovered that my friend who I thought to be female had actually been lieing to me for close to six months..

Gender does not matter to me online, but the fact that he continued the lie for so long really made me angry.

Due to this, I may be a little untrusting of people, but it really does not make any difference to me what age, gender, religion or whatever they are..as long as they can play and don't act like a retard they're fine by me.

or how about this, do you like staring at the back of a male character more than a female? I think the males models are dumb for my class ( i play a ranger, i dont like playing a male with long hair or a pony tail)

Hmmm, so we have two different types of people when it comes to gender roles in multiplayer gaming...

1.) The male who plays with a female character and admits to being a male at the keyboard when asked.

People seem to have a problem with this because it makes the player less "masculine" or less "macho" in their eyes, maybe they even think of him as a homosexual. The problem with those people is that their view of sexuality in general is basically infantile, and that they don't realise how real-life and in-game have absolutely nothing to do with eachother, especially in a roleplaying environment.

2.) The male who plays with a female character, but masquerades as a female at the keyboard.

People obviously have problems with this type of player because they do not like to be fooled, and as many in this thread have pointed out, one of the reasons people behave this way is because a female character/persona will seemingly attract more attention and preferential treatment.

What I want to know is; What makes people do it? I play a male character quite often, and I have no idea why. I guess I'd put it down to the fact that roleplaying games for me are escapism, something I use to forget about real life altogether, so the further my character is from reality the easier I find it to enjoy myself. I assume that this is one reason men do the same thing.

i see no problem with it myself, as a female i often make male characters (or am forced to in most games) but i know with the majority of guys, they make a female so that if they get bored they can take the armour off and stare at 'themselves'.

so none of you ever played Tomb raider or some console fighting game with female characters? how about Resident evil? Blood Rayne? there are plenty of games out there with female characters. I'm sure that doesn't stop most males from playing.
Another thing is this: why does anyone care? its just a game. seems to me if you are males and talking to a female character and then find out she is actually a he and it UPSETS you then maybe you are the one with the problem. You are the one that feels the need to seek out female characters to chat it up with.
Oh and speaking of pervs..."Long Shaft"??? you post a thread like this and have a nic like that...that tells me who the perv is here lol. most likely going around trying to cyber female characters and then thos characters that are played by guys are most likely feeling a bit uncomfortable and then telling you they are male. just my two cents.

In the end it is JUST a game. I'm sure there are people with issues that pick female characters but then again im sure there are perfectly normal well adjusted people that just like using a female model for a character....including myself

I'm one of the many that find it more pleasing on the eyes to watch a female character run around the screen than a male one. There is no other reason than that for being a shim.
